The High Way Of Humility
By admin | May 17, 2008
There is much that can be said about humility. One thing I can say about it is that it is scarce in our society. PR agents are employed to combat any perceptions of lack of humility, which only reveals the complete opposite on the side of the persons who need ‘good’ PR. (Speaking of those in the public eye).
When you listen to much of today’s entertainment, they are void of humility. The reason is because human nature sees humility as weak. However, that is human nature that is not mature. That is why teenagers are often going through life with a sense of invincibility. They have not lived long enough to experience Life. Life has a way of throwing darts our way, whether we are prepared or not, that will prove how small and dependent we really are. Yes, once Life has dealt with you, humility will rise out of the ashes.
It is unfortunate that we often need to be brought low before we can truly walk in humility. But that is not necessarily the only way. Any of us can change our minds to see ourselves, not as exalted, but as any other man or woman living Life. We all need to eat, drink and breathe to survive. We all need to be loved.
No man is ‘better’ than the other. Yet it is common today to think too much of ourselves. I am not proposing a negative self-image. Rather we need to have the right self-image. We need to see ourselves as being able to do things far beyond the limitations in our minds.
However the line is crossed when our self-image becomes greater than the next person. When we look down on others, regardless of their social or economic background, we have crossed the line from a healthy self-image to pride and arrogance. That is where humility goes out the window. Humility recognizes that your strength may be somebody else’s weakness, and somebody’s strength may be your weakness. I have an uncle who is bad at reading and writing. I am strong in those areas. However, give that same uncle a car to tear apart and build back again, and he would excel while I would be totally lost. You see, both of us have our strengths and our weaknesses. Humility recognizes that all people have their special talents and abilities and so it keeps a healthy self-image of oneself.
Humility will get you far in Life. By going low, you are essentially taking the High way. What made people like Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa great, was their humility. Long after their deaths, they will be alive in the hearts of many whose lives they have impacted directly or indirectly.
Let us walk in on the High Way of Humility. People will be drawn to us like flies to honey.
